What does tuckpointing fix on a brick house?

Tuckpointing in Wilmington, NC means we rake the worn mortar out of your brick joints and pack in fresh mortar, which is one of the most effective and lasting ways to keep water from getting into the wall.

Most people call me after they spot sand piling up under a wall, joints that have sunk back behind the brick face, or a crack zigzagging through the mortar, and they want to know if it's a small fix or a big one. The price mostly comes down to how much of the wall actually has worn joints, how high we have to work and whether some bricks are damaged too, because every joint gets raked and packed by hand. The schedule mostly turns on the size of the wall and on whether your address needs a permit or historic review before we start. If the whole face of an older wall is tired, that's closer to a masonry restoration job, and I'll tell you which one you're looking at when I walk the wall with you and put your estimate in writing.

How we do tuckpointing on your wall

I walk the wall with you first and mark the joints that are worn, since sound original joints are better left alone. Before we touch the whole wall, we mix a test batch and set a little in a hidden corner so you can see how the color matches once it dries, and you decide if it looks right before we go any further. Then our crew rakes the old mortar out of the marked joints until we hit solid material, brushes and rinses out the dust so the new mortar grabs, and packs the joints back full in layers instead of smearing mortar over the top. We tool each joint to match the shape of the old ones, clean the mortar off the brick faces and leave your yard the way we found it.

Tuckpointing often turns up other work. If a brick is cracked or its face has popped off, new mortar around it won't help, so we take care of that as brick repair while we're already there. And since you've got a mason on site, it's a good time to talk about the outdoor project you've been putting off, like driveway pavers to replace a worn-out slab.

Tuckpointing rules and older brick in Wilmington

In Wilmington, building permits come from the New Hanover County Department of Permits & Inspections, which requires them for alterations and remodeling. The city's list names that kind of work and doesn't mention tuckpointing, so it isn't settled whether your job needs a permit, and the county office is the place to ask. If your house sits in one of the city's local historic districts or historic overlays, exterior alterations there need a certificate of appropriateness, which is the city signing off that the change fits the district's historic character. Before work starts, we tell you which office handles your address and whether a historic district review could come into it, and we help you get the paperwork together.

We're based in Wilmington and work across the cities around it, and a lot of what we repoint is older brick, from house fronts and front steps to chimneys and garden walls. We see the same mix of older brick and newer brick-front homes on jobs in Myrtle Grove and Ogden, and we treat the mortar with the same care there.

Frequently asked questions

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

Yes, most of the time tuckpointing is just another name for repointing, the repair of worn-out mortar joints in a brick wall. The name also covers an older finish, where a flush joint close to the brick's color gets a thin strip of contrasting mortar so the joints look very thin. If your house has that look, point it out at the estimate so we plan for it.

How do I know if my brick needs tuckpointing?

Your brick needs repointing when the mortar has worn back more than ¼ inch, is crumbling, or has hairline cracks or gaps, and also when bricks are cracked along with the joints. The first step is having a mason look the wall over, because that look is what decides whether repointing is really needed. That's what I do at the estimate, pointing right at the joints I'm talking about.

How much does tuckpointing cost in Wilmington, NC?

Across the US, tuckpointing brick usually runs about $5 to $25 per square foot of wall, and that's the general market range, not our price. The spread is wide because repointing is slow hand work, so a wall with a few worn patches lands very differently from one where nearly every joint is shot. Call (910) 218-9550 and I'll come look at yours.

Who reviews exterior brick work on a house in a Wilmington historic district?

For minor work, the city's historic preservation planner can approve the certificate of appropriateness through an administrative bypass, which helps smaller projects get finished. Major work goes to Wilmington's Historic Preservation Commission for review and approval. If your house is in a district, mention it when you call so we can plan around the review.

What is the best way to choose mortar for an older brick house?

The new mortar should be equal to or weaker than the old mortar in compressive strength, which is how much squeezing it can take. Mortar that's stronger than the old stuff puts stress on older brick and causes spalling, where the face of the brick breaks away, so an older house calls for a softer mix than new construction would. Color comes next, which is what our test patch in a hidden corner is for.

How long does tuckpointing last?

Mortar lasts roughly 25 to 50 years, while the brick itself lasts about 100 years or more. The joints wear out long before the brick does, so you can plan on repointing now and then as the wall ages.

  • Brick repair

When a brick is cracked, loose or flaking, fresh mortar alone won't fix it, so we replace or reset the damaged bricks and keep the wall sound.

  • Driveway pavers

If your driveway is cracked or sinking, pavers over a well-packed base give you a surface where one damaged paver can be lifted out and replaced.
