Is a paver driveway right for your Wilmington home?

A paver driveway in Wilmington is made of interlocking concrete pavers set on a thin layer of sand over a packed stone base. You get a drive that can be fixed a few pavers at a time instead of tearing out a whole slab.

Most people who call me about pavers have a concrete drive with a crack right where the tires sit, or a gravel drive that keeps washing out toward the street. The price mostly moves with how many square feet you're paving, whether the old driveway has to be torn out and hauled off, how deep the base goes, the paver and pattern you pick, and how much cutting the edges and the street end need. The schedule turns on dry weather and on any city permit for the part by the street. If you want a matching path to the front door, our walkway construction work can go in at the same time. When I walk the drive with you, you get all of that in a written estimate for your own driveway.

How we build your driveway pavers

Before you sign anything, I go over the base, the edging and where your driveway meets the city's strip by the street, so every piece of the drive is spelled out in the estimate. Once work starts, our crew digs out the old drive and hauls it away, then lays the stone base and packs it in layers so it doesn't settle later. Next we screed the sand, dragging it flat with a straight board, and lay the pavers in the pattern you picked. We set the edging along the sides so the pavers can't creep out and cut the pieces that meet the garage, the lawn and the street. Then we run a plate compactor over the whole drive and sweep sand into the joints to lock it together. Last, we clean up and I walk it with you so you can see where the water heads off it.

A new driveway often shows up whatever's next to it. If your drive cuts along a slope, our retaining wall construction keeps the yard from sliding down onto the pavers. When the brick steps or porch beside it have tired mortar, masonry restoration brings them up so the front of the house looks like it belongs together.

Driveway pavers in Wilmington and the city's strip by the street

In Wilmington, the last stretch of your driveway is often city land. The city's right-of-way is public property that takes in driveways, curbs and sidewalks, and it typically runs 10 to 12 feet past the edge of the street or curb. Driveway permits come from the city's Engineering Right-of-Way office, and anyone working in that strip has to have a valid permit on site. I'll tell you which office handles your address, and we help you get the paperwork together before we start. We also make the NC 811 call before digging there, as the city requires, so buried lines get marked first.

Around here we see a lot of older concrete drives cracked across the middle and gravel drives that wash toward the road after a hard rain, and the fix usually starts with a proper base and a plan for the water. We're based in Wilmington and pave drives across the cities around it, and on jobs in Leland and Myrtle Grove I check who handles the street end too, because it isn't always the same office.

Why call us for driveway pavers

  • You deal with me, start to finish

I'm the one who comes to look at your driveway, and I'm on site with our masons while it gets built. The person who priced your job is the one you can grab with a question on paving day.

  • Our own crew since 2021

We've been in business since 2021, and before that I spent years as another mason's right hand here, running the crew and talking with customers. That's where I learned that what goes under the work decides how it holds up, so that's where I start on a driveway.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. That counts at the street end, because Wilmington expects anyone working in its right-of-way to carry comprehensive general liability insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver driveway cost in Wilmington, NC?

Installing a sand-based concrete paver driveway in Wilmington usually costs about $13 to $16 per square foot, according to a local price guide, and that doesn't include tearing out an old driveway. That's the going rate around here, not our price. Your own number comes in the written estimate after I walk the drive with you.

Who issues driveway permits in Wilmington, NC?

The city's right-of-way office issues them, the same office that covers the street end of your drive. The city asks you to allow about 72 hours on average to process a completed application. If your driveway needs survey help, a City Survey Crew comes out within 5 days of a completed application to stake the driveway's line and height, so we plan the start date around those waits.

How thick should the base be under driveway pavers?

Trade guidance says a home driveway on well-drained soil should have a base at least 6 inches thick. One Wilmington price guide priced its driveway on a 4-inch base, so check the base depth in every quote before you compare prices. Ours is written right into the estimate.

How do I choose a driveway paver installer in North Carolina?

Start with the license, because North Carolina requires a state-issued general contractor license on any project valued at $40,000 or more. The paver trade group ICPI recommends experienced installers who hold a current certificate from its Concrete Paver Installer Certification Program, so ask each installer to show it. ICPI says the certificate means the installer passed an exam on installation, not that the finished work will be good, so look carefully at their job references too.

Are permeable pavers worth it for a driveway in Wilmington?

They can work, but North Carolina's stormwater manual says permeable interlocking concrete pavers often have the highest up-front cost of the permeable pavements, and their upkeep may run higher. Plan on refilling the joints with small gravel after cleaning, and on pulling more weeds. If low upkeep is your main goal, weigh that before you pick one.

How long does it take to get a paver driveway installed in Wilmington?

Most of the wait comes before the pavers go down, from the city permit for the street end and from the weather. Paver guide specifications call for the sand and pavers to go in outside heavy rain, so a wet spell can push the start date back. When I walk your drive, we'll talk through the timing for your size and layout.

  • Retaining wall construction

When your driveway runs along a slope or a raised bed, a solid retaining wall keeps dirt and runoff from creeping onto the pavers you just paid for.

  • Masonry restoration

If the brick steps, columns or porch beside your new driveway look tired, restoration repairs the brick and mortar so the front of the house looks like one piece.
