Does my brick need pointing, and what's involved?

Brick pointing, which masons also call repointing or tuckpointing, means cutting the worn mortar out of your brick joints to an even depth and packing in fresh mortar, and on a brick house in Wilmington, NC it's one of the best ways to keep water out of the wall.

Most calls start the same way. You notice sand at the foot of a wall, a joint you can scratch out with a key, or mortar that's sunk back so the brick edges stick out, and you want to know how bad it is. If some of the bricks are cracked or flaking too, we can replace those as part of brick repair. The price mostly comes down to how much wall needs doing, how high it goes and how soft or stubborn the old mortar is, since hand work on old brick takes longer than newer brick. The schedule turns on the size of the job and whether a historic district review has to happen first, so I walk it with you and put your estimate in writing before anything starts.

How we do brick pointing on your house

Here's how a pointing job goes with us. I start by walking the wall with you and marking the joints that are soft, cracked or sunk back, and because it's hard to tell which ones are actually letting water in, the usual advice is to do every joint in that stretch of wall, not just the worst few. On older or soft brick our crew cuts the old mortar out by hand with chisels and hammers instead of a grinder, because a saw in a thin joint almost always chips the brick edges and runs too deep into the short vertical joints. It's slower, but your brick edges stay whole. We take the joints back to an even depth and mix new mortar that's no stronger than what's already in your wall, because harder mortar pushes the stress into older brick and the face starts flaking off, which masons call spalling. Then we pack the joints, shape them to match the rest of the wall and clean up.

Sometimes the joints are telling a bigger story. If the same cracks keep opening up after they've been filled, the wall may be moving, and that calls for foundation repair before fresh mortar goes in. Chimneys get the same careful pointing, and when the crown or flashing is part of the leak we take care of it under chimney repair.

Brick pointing in Wilmington, permits and historic districts

New Hanover County Permits & Inspections issues Wilmington's building permits for alterations and remodeling inside city limits, and its list names that kind of work but doesn't mention brick pointing, so the list alone doesn't settle whether your job needs a permit and the county is the place to ask. You can apply online through COAST, the county's permitting portal, or in person. If your house sits in one of Wilmington's local historic districts or historic overlays, the city also requires a certificate of appropriateness for exterior changes, which is its check that the work fits the district's historic character. We tell you which office handles your address and whether a historic review could come into it, and we help you get the paperwork together before work starts.

A lot of what I see around Wilmington is older brick that was pointed once before with a hard gray mortar over the softer original, and that's usually where the brick faces start to go. We cut that back out the same careful way, and we run into the same mix of old and newer brick on jobs in Kings Grant and Leland.

Why call us for brick pointing

  • I'm on your job myself

I'm the one who comes out to look at your wall, and I'm on site with our crew of masons while the work gets done. You won't explain your joints to one person and then meet a stranger on the ladder.

  • Careful mortar work since 2021

I spent years as another mason's right hand here before starting this business in 2021, and careful mortar work on older brick is what we're best known for. On a pointing job, that's what keeps your brick edges and faces in one piece.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. North Carolina law requires a general contractor to be licensed once a project's total cost reaches $40,000, so it's fair to ask any mason you talk to where they stand.

What counts most here is mortar that suits your brick, and nobody can tell you that until they've looked at the joints up close. Get in touch with a few photos of the worn joints, your address and whether the house is in a historic district, and I'll come take a look. We're based in Wilmington and work across the cities around it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my brick needs pointing?

Your brick needs pointing when the mortar has worn back more than a quarter inch from the face, crumbles when you rub it, has holes in it, or shows hairline cracks or gaps between the brick and the mortar. Spotting those early lets you plan the work before more water gets into the wall. Send me a photo and I'll tell you what I'm seeing.

How much does brick pointing cost in Wilmington, NC?

There's no set price, because the cost comes down to the labor on your particular wall. A short run of joints on a garden wall is a much smaller job than a whole side of the house or a chimney that needs ladders and setup, and matching the color of old mortar adds some time. I'll give you your number in writing after we walk the wall together.

How long does new mortar last after brick pointing?

Mortar joints usually last more than 25 years, depending on how much weather the wall takes and what went into the mix, while the brick itself can last well over 100 years. So needing pointing doesn't mean your wall is failing. It means the part that wears out first is due to be renewed.

Who should I hire to repoint my brick?

Hire someone who does repointing regularly, because even an excellent mason may not be qualified for this particular work. Look at joints they've pointed before you choose, and ask how they'll get the old mortar out, since power tools in unskilled hands can wreck soft brick.

Can I paint or seal my brick in a Wilmington historic district?

Wilmington's historic district design standards say to leave unpainted masonry walls unpainted and unsealed, because paint or sealer could speed up the brick's deterioration. For your house, that means good joints are the fix, not a coating over the top. The certificate of appropriateness I mentioned above may come into the pointing work too.

What is the best way to pick mortar for repointing old brick?

Pick it to match the mortar already in your wall, not by grabbing the strongest bag at the store. Type O often serves older brickwork and Type N may suit newer brick, and I'll tell you which one your house calls for once I've looked at the joints.

  • Foundation repair

When stair-step cracks keep reopening after fresh mortar, the wall is likely moving underneath, and fixing what's below comes before pointing joints that would just crack again.

  • Chimney repair

Chimney joints sit up high in the open and tend to wear out first, so a loose crown, bad flashing or crumbling stack mortar is worth having looked at together.
