Request an estimateIs stone veneer a good fit for your wall in Wilmington?
Stone veneer installation in Wilmington puts thin pieces of manufactured stone onto a wall you already have, with grouted and tooled mortar joints between them or no grout at all for a dry stack look. A block foundation, a chimney or a front wall ends up looking like stone without the weight of solid stone.
Most calls I get start with a bare block foundation, a plain chimney or an entry wall you're tired of looking at. Adhered veneer is thinner, lighter and less expensive than full anchored stone, which needs its own support off the foundation and is closer to our stone masonry work. The catch is that the wall behind adhered veneer carries all of its weight, so how that wall is holding up matters as much as the price. Your price moves with the square footage, the stone you choose, whether the joints are grouted or dry stacked, and how much prep the wall needs. The schedule mostly turns on that prep and the weather. I'll put your own figure in writing after I walk the job with you.
How we handle a stone veneer installation
Before we order any stone, I check the wall behind the veneer, because the stone is only as sound as what it's stuck to. I'm looking for cracks, soft or crumbling spots and whatever covers the wall today. Then I walk you through how we'll keep water from getting in behind it, because that plan decides what goes on the wall before the stone does. From there our crew preps the surface. Wherever your wall needs them, we put up the water barrier, metal lath and a scratch coat, which is a rough first layer of mortar the stone can grip. Then we set each stone in mortar. We grout and tool the joints, or leave them dry stacked if that's the look you picked, and we clean the stone and the ground around it before we leave.
A lot of veneer ends up on block. If the wall you want covered hasn't been built yet, we can lay it up first as part of our concrete block walls work. On a new house or addition, our foundation block wall installation gives you a foundation we can face in stone once it's up.
Stone veneer installation permits and historic review in Wilmington
The New Hanover County Department of Permits & Inspections issues all building permits in Wilmington. The city's permit list names alterations and remodeling, but it doesn't mention stone veneer, so ask the county office whether your job needs a permit. You can apply online through COAST, the county's permit portal, or in person at 230 Government Center Drive, Suite 170. If your house sits in one of the city's local historic districts or historic overlays, exterior changes need a certificate of appropriateness, which is a review that checks the work fits the district's historic character. New stone on an outside wall is an exterior change. We tell you which office handles your address and whether historic review could come into it, and we help you get the paperwork together before work starts.
We're based in Wilmington and work across the cities around it. Most of the veneer people ask us about goes over block foundations, crawlspace walls and chimneys, on older brick homes and newer framed ones alike. We see the same mix on jobs in Myrtle Grove and Leland, and we handle it the same way there.
Why call us for stone veneer
I quote it and I'm on site
I'm the one who comes out to look at your wall, and I'm on site with our crew of masons while the stone goes up. If you've got a question halfway through, you're asking the person who saw the wall at the start.
Running our own crew since 2021
We started this business in 2021. Before that, I spent years as another mason's right hand, running the crew on everything from chimneys to garden walls. All that time on older brick taught me to judge a wall before I trust anything to it.
License and insurance you can see
We're fully licensed and insured. North Carolina law requires a licensed general contractor once a project's total cost reaches $40,000, so on a job that size, ask to see the license before you sign.

Frequently asked questions
How much does stone veneer installation cost in Wilmington, NC?
Installed stone veneer, meaning stone and labor together, usually costs about $15 to $45 per square foot across the US. That's a national figure, not our price. Where your wall lands depends on the stone, the joint style and how much prep the wall needs, and I'll give you your own number in writing after I see it.
Can stone veneer go on any wall?
No. An industry installation guide says adhered stone veneer shouldn't go over a deteriorating or unsound wall, or over EIFS, a synthetic stucco system laid over foam insulation. Stone can go straight onto concrete or block that's rough and free of dirt, paint, waterproofing and form oil. Concrete can be power washed or blasted to get it that way. When that bare surface can't be reached, lath and a scratch coat go on first, and that adds a step to the job.
What causes stone veneer to fail?
One stone maker's installation guide names water getting into the wall as the most common cause of failure. An industry tech note also says that on outside walls over wood sheathing, two separate layers of water-resistive barrier belong behind the stone. Before you sign with anyone, ask how they plan to keep water out of your wall.
Why does the installer matter so much with stone veneer?
An industry installation guide says workmanship in the field tends to be the main source of problems when veneer performs poorly. It points to materials chosen only on price and to methods aimed at speed over quality. Weigh how carefully a crew works right alongside what it charges.
How do I know if it's too cold or too hot to install stone veneer?
Guide specifications for manufactured stone call for protecting new veneer when it's 40°F or colder, through 48 hours after the work, and for protecting it from drying too fast above 100°F. If your job runs into cold or very hot days, ask how the crew will protect the wall, and I'll tell you how we'll handle yours.
Do I need approval to put stone veneer on a house in a Wilmington historic district?
Yes. The city requires a certificate of appropriateness for exterior alterations in its local historic districts and historic overlays. The review checks that the change fits the district's historic character, so sort that out before any stone is ordered.
